India will play a one-off Test against Afghanistan

The match will start from June 6

BCCI will reportedly field India's strongest possible lineup for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan in June. Coming off the back of consecutive T20 World Cup titles and a Champions Trophy triumph, the selection committee is signaling an end to any perceived casual approach toward the longest format.

The tour, which begins on June 6, will feature a historic one-off Test at the new Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, followed by a three-match ODI series. Despite the fixture falling outside the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, India is expected to be led by Shubman Gill and will likely include premier fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

According to reports, the board intends to bypass experimentation or the use of backup players for this match. This decision is particularly noteworthy given that the squad will be transitioning immediately from a demanding IPL 2026 season. However, the BCCI remains firm in its stance that the senior red-ball specialists must feature to maintain the team's standard in the format.

“The India Test cap isn’t for experimentation. For that, you have India A shadow tours. As of now, in Tests, Bumrah, Siraj and Prasidh are top three bowlers on the selectors’ radar,” a BCCI source said to PTI.

Team India's struggles in Tests

Under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, India's performance in Test cricket has been characterized as lackluster, with the team struggling to find consistency. While India secured home victories against Bangladesh and the West Indies, these wins have been overshadowed by a difficult transitional phase following the international retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite the challenges of rebuilding a squad, the pressure on the head coach remains immense, as every loss in the red-ball format invites significant public and critical scrutiny.

Gambhir’s coaching tenure has been marked by several disappointing results, most notably a historic clean sweep at the hands of New Zealand on home soil. The team also faced setbacks in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, losing three matches in that series. While India managed a 2-2 draw against England and a home series win over the West Indies, they suffered another major blow with a 0-2 home series loss to South Africa. These results have raised concerns about the team's ability to maintain its traditional dominance in home conditions.

The statistical reality of this WTC cycle paints a grim picture for India’s qualification hopes. Out of nine matches played, the team has managed only four wins, leaving them stranded in sixth place with a points percentage of 48.15. Having already played the second-most games in the cycle, India faces a much steeper climb to reach the 2027 final than in previous years, largely due to the points dropped in the drawn England series and the home defeat to South Africa.

Despite the precarious standing, India still has nine Tests remaining to turn their fortunes around. The upcoming schedule includes a two-match away series in Sri Lanka and a challenging tour of New Zealand later this year. The WTC cycle will ultimately culminate for India with a high-stakes home Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in 2027.
