BCCI has refuted any reports suggesting Ajit Agarkar's contract extension

The report claimed that Ajit Agarkar has requested BCCI to extend his contract till 2027

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially dismissed recent reports claiming that chief selector Ajit Agarkar requested a contract extension. Contrary to earlier rumors, a senior official clarified that the former Indian pacer has not sought to prolong his tenure specifically to oversee the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.

BCCI gives crucial update on Ajit Agarkar’s extension

According to the BCCI source, Agarkar’s current agreement, which began in 2023 just prior to the Asia Cup, is set to run until September 2026. Once that term concludes, Agarkar and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia are expected to meet to evaluate the committee's progress and determine whether he will continue in the role through the next major World Cup cycle.

“The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI, and the selectors’ contract runs till September this year. Ajit’s contract ends in September, and after that the BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he would continue till next year’s ODI World Cup. A senior selector can continue for up to four years as per the constitution, and he doesn’t need to seek an extension," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI on Friday.

Ajit Agarkar's phenomenal track record as India's chief selector

Ajit Agarkar has been a cornerstone of Indian cricket administration since taking over as chairman of selectors in July 2023. His tenure has been defined by navigating a period of significant transition, particularly in the Test and T20 squads following the international retirements of legendary figures Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Under his leadership, the selection committee has successfully managed the integration of new talent while maintaining India's status as a global powerhouse.

Agarkar’s track record in major tournaments is remarkably distinguished. He oversaw the selection of the squad that reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final with a perfect win record, and his tenure has been marked by an era of unprecedented success. This includes securing two T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026, the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and back-to-back Asia Cup victories in 2023 and 2025.

Looking ahead, the selection committee is already turning its attention to the next ODI World Cup. Although the tournament is still a year away, reports suggest that a core group of approximately 20 probable players has already been identified. The five national selectors will use the upcoming IPL season, which begins on March 28, to closely monitor the form and fitness of these cricketers.

“The BCCI is looking at each selector watching at least one game per week which covers five games per week from the venue. Else obviously they can track on TV," the official added.
