The BCCI are reportedly planning to hold a meeting and discuss about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future with the team with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. According to a report by The Times of India, Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar will meet in Ahmedabad following the conclusion of the third ODI between India and South Africa in Visakhapatnam.
Rohit and Virat yet to be given any clarity
The duo of Rohit and Virat, who are now only active in ODIs, are yet to be given any clarity over their future with the Indian team and if they will be featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup. With India not playing many one-day matches, it remains to be seen if they will be able to keep a place in the team for the next 1 and a half years.
"It is very important that players of Rohit and Kohli's stature are given clarity about what is expected of them and how the current management views their roles. They can't just be playing with uncertainty," a BCCI source was quoted as saying in the report.
The source further said that even though both Rohit and Virat delivered in the third and final ODI of the series against Australia, they looked to be "rusty" in the first two games. Notably, Rohit finished as the top-scorer of the series against Australia with 202 runs from three innings while Virat remained unbeaten on 74 in the final match after getting dismissed for ducks in the first two games.
"They did score runs in the third ODI in Australia. But the series was already lost and the match was set up by the bowlers in the first innings. They looked rusty in the first two matches. One can't afford that in every series," the source said.
Rohit and Virat to feature in Vijay Hazare Trophy?
Meanwhile, another report by The Times of India claimed that BCCI want both Rohit and Virat to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. The report stated that BCCI had wanted the duo to play matches in England during the summer, but since that didn't happen, they will be advised by the board to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy that will commence from December 24.
“The board would have been pleased if they (Rohit and Virat) had played some cricket in England during the summer. They will be advised to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month," a BCCI source was quoted as saying.
