BCCI warned to build a future beyond Jasprit Bumrah after ODI World Cup 2027

Jasprit Bumrah's injury riddle has reportedly forced BCCI to start thinking life without the pace spearhead in the longest format of the game. Following the 2027 World Cup, Bumrah's participation in international cricket could be restricted primarily to T20Is. Recurring physical setbacks have raised serious doubts over his ability to maintain the physical conditioning required for Tests, signaling that the national side may need to transition toward a future without their premier fast bowler in Test and ODI setups.

CoE drops hint at life without Bumrah in Tests

The fast bowler is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for a left knee issue, a persistent trouble since T20 World Cup 2026. He has been out of action since July 16, when he picked up a fielding-related impact injury during the second ODI against England in Cardiff, subsequently missing the final match at Lord's.

According to reports from TOI, the CoE was actively attempting to step up Bumrah's bowling volume ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series, but determined his recovery timeline was too short given his prolonged absence from long-form bowling. Medical staff have refrained from setting a return date, with insiders emphasising that Indian cricket must begin preparing for a strategic shift away from reliance on Bumrah in red-ball and 50-over formats moving forward.

“The CoE is very careful about him. They haven’t given any timeline on him. Anyway, Indian cricket may have to now start getting ready for life without Bumrah, especially in the longer formats after next year," a TOI report stated.

Indian cricket plagued with injury concerns

A rising tide of player injuries across all formats has brought COE into the spotlight, raising serious questions about India's rehabilitation and fitness management protocols. The national side is currently grappling with a lengthy injury list besides Bumrah: Sai Sudharsan is out with a damaged left big toe, Washington Sundar is sidelined by a quadriceps strain, and both Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are currently undergoing recovery for hamstring issues.

The most damaging blow comes in the form of Bumrah, who has been officially sidelined for Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to overcome the knee injury he sustained in England. His absence creates a major void for the squad, especially given his indispensable role in India's dual ambitions for the upcoming World Cup.
