Ben Stokes to retire? Nightclub controversy sparks fresh doubts over England star's future

In a series of shocking events, England's Test skipper Ben Stokes is contemplating a retirement from international cricket because of a fallout from the nightclub incident that has placed him under an investigation conducted by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has conducted an investigation into Ben Stokes and fellow all-rounder Gus Atkinson over an alleged breach of team protocols following England's win over New Zealand in the opening Test at Lord's. The alleged incident took place during the early hours of Monday at the Rex Rooms nightclub on London's King's Road, where members of rugby club Saracens were also present for post-match celebrations.

Big setback for Ben Stokes

The situation reportedly got serious after a disagreement between Gus Atkinson and a Saracens academy player. During the altercations, a punch allegedly aimed at the England all-rounder instead struck an ECB security staff member, who endured a cut and needed stitches. Neither Atkinson nor Ben Stokes was injured in the incident.

However, the incident has taken a serious hit on Ben Stokes' captaincy, especially with the ECB having previously faced criticism over off-field issues involving Harry Brook and Ben Duckett during the Ashes. Those incidents have led the board to implement strict team rules, including a midnight curfew for players, making the current controversy even more serious.

As per a latest report from ESPNcricinfo, the ECB has given Stokes the chance to step down as captain and continue to play Test cricket for England. However, if he opts not to resign, the board could still sack him from the role as part of any disciplinary action arising from the investigation.

Ben Stokes to retire from International cricket?

A possible retirement from international cricket has now come out as a big talking point. As per the reports, the 35-year-old is seriously thinking to step away from international cricket, who plays only Test cricket at the current point of time, and has grown distant from head coach Brendon McCullam in the aftermath of the Ashes series.

According to the report, Stokes is also contemplating taking a temporary break from cricket, a route he previously opted for in 2021. Regardless of whether he chooses a short-term break or decides to step away from the sport, both Stokes and Gus Atkinson are set to miss the second Test match against New Zealand, with Suspension likely while the ECB's investigation remains ongoing.
