He will be leading Sydney Thunder.

Prior to the start of the 2017 Big Bash League season on Wednesday, November 6, David Warner has been officially announced as the new captain of the Sydney Thunder. The Thunder's move comes after Cricket Australia called for Warner's captaincy ban to be lifted on October 25. After the 2018 Sandpaper-gate controversy, the former Australian opener was smacked with a leadership fan.

Warner was not given consideration for any leadership positions after the incident occurred while he was the vice-captain of the Australian team during the South Africa tour. Beginning in Season 14, the opener, who served as the Thunder's founding father in the BBL, will take on the job once more. Warner told the team's official website that it feels great to have the captain's tag next to his name. The 38-year-old stated that he is excited to share his expertise with the upcoming generation of talent.

Warner on getting leadership

"Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through," said Warner.

Warner stated that he wanted the Thunder team to have a positive atmosphere and that he wanted the guys to develop strong bonds with one another.

"Leadership off the field is just as crucial. I want to create an environment where we can all take a break from the game, bond, and enjoy ourselves. Whether it’s over a team meal, out on the golf course or engaging with our fans in Western Sydney, it’s all about building camaraderie and staying grounded," said Warner.

Warner on Green

Warner also praised Jason Sangha and Chris Green, the Thunder's captains during his suspension, saying he believes he can rely on both players in the future campaign.

"I want to compliment the way Greeny (Chris Green) led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season," said Warner.
