Karachi Kings have made a big change to their coaching staff ahead of the next Pakistan Super League (PSL) season, appointing former England cricketer Ravi Bopara as their new head coach. This announcement comes just days before the start of the PSL 2025.
Ravi Bopara becomes Karachi Kings new head coach
In addition to Bopara's appointment as head coach, the Karachi Kings have also named former domestic cricketer Mohammad Masroor as the assistant coach and High-Performance coach. Masroor brings a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of domestic players, which is expected to be invaluable in his role.
Even though his last international appearance was some years ago, Ravi Bopara remained active in cricket until recently, having participated in the previous year's edition of The Hundred while representing the London Spirit.
Now, however, Bopara has chosen to transition into a coaching role. At 39 years old, he will be among the younger coaches in the professional cricket landscape. Throughout his playing career, Bopara represented England in 13 Test matches, 120 One Day Internationals, and 38 T20Is.
He was a member of the England squad that finished as runners-up in the 2013 Champions Trophy. However, his ODI career faced significant challenges following England's early exit from the group stage of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. His last ODI appearance was during that tournament, and he was unable to secure a return to the national side afterward. In his role with the Karachi Kings, Mohammad Masroor will serve as the assistant to head coach Ravi Bopara. Masroor, who is 49 years old, had a professional playing career that included 55 first-class matches and 20 List A games. Despite his efforts, he was unable to break into the Pakistan national team.
Masroor was well-regarded within Pakistan's domestic cricket scene, particularly known for his exceptional fielding abilities. His skills were recognized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which appointed him as the fielding coach for the national team's tours of Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in 2024. Masroor has recent experience working with Pakistan's senior cricket team, having been involved during the final two matches of their home Test series against England. As a seasoned figure in Pakistan's domestic cricket, he possesses extensive experience collaborating with local players.
Entering the upcoming season of the PSL, Karachi Kings will have their sights set on securing their second title. Leading their charge will be the legendary Australian opening batsman David Warner, who concluded his international cricket career last year. Warner steps into the captain's role, taking over from Shan Masood. Their campaign in PSL 2025 is scheduled to start on April 12 with a match against Multan Sultans in Karachi.
