Duleep Trophy final: Tilak Varma crashes at 99 as East Zone fold South Zone for 336 to sniff title glory

South Zone skipper Tilak Varma carried forward his stellar red-ball streak, only to endure heartbreak just shy of a well-deserved century on Day 4 of Duleep Trophy 2026–27 final against East Zone at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Faced with the daunting task of responding to East Zone's massive 708-run first-innings mountain, the 23-year-old—who was aiming for his second consecutive hundred of the campaign and third overall in just six Duleep Trophy appearances, was left to farm the strike alongside his final partner. Trying to hit his way to three figures with his team teetering at nine down, the left-hander miscued an lofted shot straight back into the hands of off-spinner Kounain Quraishi, falling agonizingly short of the milestone.

That final strike wrapped up South Zone’s innings for 336, handing East Zone a commanding 372-run lead. Mukesh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for East Zone with an impressive spell off 3/62. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, Shikhar Mohan and Kounain accounted for two wickets each. With just a single day remaining in the contest, the massive first-innings lead has virtually guaranteed East Zone their first Duleep Trophy crown in 14 years.

Starting the day at 242/6, South Zone built early momentum as Tilak Varma and Chama Milind (43) mounted a solid stand. However, Milind’s departure triggered a swift collapse, with the batting side surrendering four wickets for just 18 runs to wrap up their first innings. That rapid slide firmly cemented the advantage East Zone had established over the opening two days, when skipper Ishan Kishan’s monumental 270 laid the foundation for his team’s staggering 708-run total.

Talking about Tilak's recent heroics with the bat, his recent surge in form was instrumental during South Zone's semi-final triumph over North Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru, where he repeatedly stepped up in high-pressure situations to propel his team into the summit clash.

In that semi-final fixture, Tilak offered a masterclass in adaptability across both innings. He initially pulled South Zone out of a deep hole, constructing an unbeaten 116 after the top order collapsed to 80/5, before returning in the second innings to anchor a tricky 181-run chase with a composed, undefeated 51 off 79 balls. While he has already made a mark in the international shortest format, these contrasting knocks highlighted his technical grit and tactical intelligence in the longer version of the game.

His recent heroics at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai have only reinforced his rising status in red-ball cricket. Boasting a First-Class average well above 58 through 24 matches, Tilak possesses a remarkable conversion record, having now registered eight centuries against seven fifties.

Earlier in the final, however, it was East Zone skipper Ishan Kishan who dictated terms by laying the foundation for his side's mammoth total. Kishan produced a masterclass of his own, smashing a career-best 270 laced with 30 boundaries and seven maximums. That monumental effort stands as the second-highest individual score ever compiled in a Duleep Trophy final, trailing only Raman Lamba’s iconic 320 for North Zone back in 1987.
