Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reckoned that the Rohit Sharma-led side will not able to defeat Australia 4-0 in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 which is scheduled to take place from November 22. The Men in Blue need to must achieve a 4-0 victory over Australia to seal their berth in the World Test Championship final.
Even a 2-3 loss could leave a slim chance for second place, provided New Zealand draw with England and South Africa split their series. For defending champions Australia to qualify for a successive time, a 3-2 victory over India will keep them ahead in the race, even if they falter against Sri Lanka later on.
In the exclusive conversation with India today, Sunil Gavaskar reckoned that India should focus on trying to win the series in Australia rather than World Test Championship final.
"No, I don't. I actually think that India cannot beat Australia 4-0 in the in the Test series. I'd be over the moon, if they do that. But 4-0? India can win 3-1, 4-0 is... I don't want talk about the World Test Championship Final. Now just focus on trying to win the series in Australia. Never mind whether you win 1-0,2-0,3-0, 3-1,2-1. But go and win. Because that is how all of us Indian cricket fans are going to be back to feeling good again" said Sunil Gavaskar.
