An excessive immune system in the patient triggers serious inflammation, which severely damages the vital tissues and organs such as the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow.
According to Shappoor's younger brother Ghamai Zadran, he initially fell ill October 2025 and as per the suggestions made by physicians in Afghanistan the former speedster traveled to India for better treatment of the disease.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Ghamai revealed that Shapoor was suffering from a very serious infection.
"It was a very serious infection," revealed Ghamai.
Ghamai added by revealing that Zadran's whole body was infected including tuberculosis (TB), later it reached his brain, which was disclosed after MRI and CT scan.
"His whole body was full of the infection including TB (tuberculosis). It also spread to his brain, which was revealed after MRI and CT scan," added Ghamai.
Despite responding well to the treatment and being released from the hospital, Shapoor experienced a relapse from infection after 20 days.
"The doctor said we could drop in for the check-ups frequently. He (Shapoor) was feeling good for about 20 days before he got the infection again. Then we admitted him to the hospital (again)," revealed.
In January 2026, he was admitted at a Delhi hospital after his medical visa was expedited with the help of Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and players like Rashid Khan.
Following a recent bone marrow test it was revealed that Shapoor has reached an advanced stage of the disease leaving him under continual supervision.
