Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim on September 4 (Sunday) announced his retirement from T20I cricket. Rahim's retirement decision comes on the backdrop of Bangladesh's abysmal performance in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 wherein they were eliminated from the tournament after losing both their Group B matches. The wicketkeeper-batter announced his decision on Twitter and said that he is open to playing franchise T20 tournaments.

"I would like to announce my retirement from T20 INTERNATIONALS and focus on Test and ODI formats of the game. I will be available to play franchise leagues when the opportunity arrives. Looking forward to proudly represent my nation in the two formats-MR15," Rahim said in tweet.

The diminutive right-handed batter could only manage scores of 1 and 4 with the bat and was also lackluster behind the stumps.

The 35-year-old, who is among the handful cricketers to have played 100 T20 matches, walks away from the format after representing his country in 102 T20Is. He made his debut against Zimbabwe in 2006 and the right-hander scored 1500 runs in his career with the help of six half-centuries and with a strike rate of 115.03.

Also, Rahim's decision comes two months after star Bangladesh opening batter Tamim Iqbal called quits on his international career in the shortest format of the game.
