In a high-scoring thriller in Raipur, India Masters' leg-spinner faced the wrath of Lendl Simmons as he conceded five sixes and a four in a single over. The former Mumbai Indians (MI) batter got the crowd at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium on their feet with his explosive batting on March 8.
In the 10th over, Simmons hit Rahul for a six over long-on, a four square of the wicket and four sixes over deep mid-wicket to stage West Indies' comeback. Rahul ended up conceding 75 runs from three overs.
Simmons did not much take time to go berserk in the run chase as he came out to bat in the ninth over. Pawan Negi dismissed Simmons who scored 38 runs from 13 deliveries.
Despite Simmons' cameo and half-centuries from openers Dwayne Smith (34-ball 79) and William Perkins (24-ball 52), West Indies managed to post 246/6 in the run chase of 254 and lost by seven runs. Left-arm spinner Negi took two wickets for 27 runs in three overs whereas Stuart Binny bagged three wickets for 13 runs in two overs.
Indian openers lay platform
Earlier, in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh led the side. West Indies captain Brian Lara won the toss and opted to bowl first. After the powerplay overs, India Masters were 51 for no loss. Ambati Rayudu reached his half-century with a six from 30 balls. He was dismissed by left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn in the ninth over. He scored 63 runs from 35 balls including eight fours and four sixes.
Yuvraj finishes it off in style
Saurabh Tiwary accelerated and reached his fifty from 32 balls in the 14th over. Gurkeerat Singh Mann pushed the scoring rate and hit Jonathan Carter for two sixes and a four before getting dismissed. He scored 46 runs from 21 balls. In the 16th over, Tiwary departed for a 37-ball 60. In the slog overs, Yuvraj took down Caribbean bowlers, hitting them for three sixes and six fours in his unbeaten 20-ball 49. He helped India Masters post 253/3 on the board.
This was India Masters' fourth win from five games. They have already qualified for the semifinals.
