Shreyas Iyer also talked about 15-year-old's future prospects

In the high-stakes world of Indian cricket, age is often just a number, but changes in team dynamics move faster than a well-timed boundary. The rise of 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has captured the imagination of cricket enthusiasts across the nation. However, as Team India outlines its long-term vision for upcoming flagship ICC events, including T20 World Cup 2028, questions have begun to surface regarding where the teenage phenomenon sits in the national selection hierarchy.

And I know that his time will come: Shreyas Iyer on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Following India's triumph at the Asian Games 2026, standalone skipper Shreyas Iyer offered a grounded perspective on Sooryavanshi’s immediate international trajectory. Acknowledging the stiff competition at the top order, Iyer made it clear that India currently boasts seasoned, World Cup-winning openers who have earned their spots through proven track records.

Speaking candidly after India secured the Asian Games 2026 gold medal, Iyer acknowledged that while Sooryavanshi remains firmly within the squad of 15, patience will be vital.

“I keep interacting with Vaibhav in terms of what he does outside the field, because everyone talks to him about cricket, and we know how talented and gifted as an individual he is. So, just to talk about his lifestyle outside, that interaction, knowing about his family, what he does, what not, that excites him more because he’s more of himself when he talks about it. He is a very silent guy, but on the field, is very destructive. So, that’s like an irony when you look at him. He’s a very charming, sweet guy to interact with and good to have him around the dressing room,” Iyer said.

“And I know that his time will come, because we have been playing with World Cup-winning openers right now, and they deserve the time out there and he’s still in the 15. So definitely, when his time comes, he is going to dominate Indian cricket,” he added.

Iyer’s remarks offer a clear indication of the bench hierarchy heading into upcoming assignments, including the T20I series in the West Indies. With Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma operating as the primary opening duo, Sooryavanshi is expected to serve as a backup option rather than a starting line-up fixture.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s International Journey So Far

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi’s entry into senior international cricket has been remarkable. Having created ripples in youth cricket and domestic tournaments, the left-handed opener earned his senior India T20I debut earlier in July 2026 against England.

Metric / Parameter Value
International Matches 8 Matches
Total Runs 243 Runs

Across his initial 8 T20I appearances, Sooryavanshi has accumulated 243 runs at a solid average of 30.75. His breakthrough performance arrived during the tour of Zimbabwe, where he blasted a record 19-ball 50, becoming the youngest player in international cricket history to register a half-century, and followed it up with an 81 off 49 balls. During the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, Sooryavanshi contributed crucial knocks at the top of the order. In two batting outings, he notched 53 runs at an explosive strike rate of 176.66, including a quickfire 38 off 21 balls against Sri Lanka in the semi-final and a brief 15 off 9 balls in the final against Pakistan.

Comparing Contenders: Sooryavanshi vs Sanju Samson & Abhishek Sharma

To understand why Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his big burst, one must look at the incumbents currently occupying the opening slots: Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.

Metric Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Abhishek Sharma Sanju Samson
Role Left-Hand Opener Left-Hand Opening All-Rounder Right-Hand wicketkeeper-batter
T20I Experience 8 Matches 62 Matches 72 Matches
T20I Strike Rate 186 195 156
Key Advantage Fearless powerplay hitter, Youthful exuberance High-impact powerplay scoring & spin option Experienced, versatile keeper-batter

The Powerplay Dynamics

Abhishek Sharma: Operates at a career T20I strike rate of nearly 195. His ability to attack both pace and spin from ball one, combined with his left-arm orthodox bowling, gives team management valuable tactical flexibility.

Sanju Samson: Provides elite wicketkeeping alongside top-order explosive power. With multiple international centuries and extensive pressure-handling experience, Samson remains an established figure in white-ball setups.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: While Sooryavanshi possesses clean striking abilities, he remains relatively inexperienced against top-tier international bowling combinations over sustained series.

Is Sooryavanshi not in T20 World Cup 2028 plans?

Shreyas Iyer’s post-match observations raise a crucial question: Is Sooryavanshi currently outside India’s primary blueprint for the 2028 T20 World Cup?

1. Management’s focus on stability

The Indian selection committee historically favors continuity following World Cup cycles. With proven match-winners leading the charge, integrating a 15-year-old as a regular starter in major ICC events requires balancing raw potential with squad stability.

2. Time is on his side

It is essential to keep age in perspective. By the time the T20 World Cup 2028 arrives, Sooryavanshi will still only be 17 years old. Being on the bench or rotating through bilateral series at age 15 does not signify a missed opportunity; rather, it reflects a structured development path.

3. Development over rushing

Exposing young batters to international dressing rooms while managing their workload allows them to refine their game in domestic and IPL setups. As Iyer noted, Sooryavanshi’s presence in the 15-man squad ensures he learns the demands of international cricket without carrying the weight of immediate expectations.

Far from missing the bus, the 15-year-old is positioning himself for a sustained career at the top level. While he may need to wait for his starting opportunity while Samson and Sharma open the innings, his early stats prove that he belongs on the international stage. As Shreyas Iyer summarised, Sooryavanshi’s time will come, and when it does, Indian cricket may well witness the start of a dominant era.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see whether Sooryavanshi's current form secure him a place in India's playing XI for the upcoming five match T20I series against West Indies, which is scheduled to get underway from October 6 The five-match outing will be played across Ekana Cricket Stadium (Lucknow), JSCA International Stadium (Ranchi), Holkar Stadium (Indore), Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Hyderabad), M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru)
