Subramaniam Badrinath feels CSK should release Ravichandran Ashwin

There are rumours that Ashwin will leave CSK before IPL 2026 mini-auction

Former India and Chennai Super Kings batter Subramaniam Badrinath feels that the franchise should release Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This comes after speculations have been rising about the latter's future with the record 5-time IPL champions. The 38-year-old had been signed by CSK for a massive fee of INR 9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, however it looks like that he won't be featuring for them for a second season running.

According to a recent report by ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has sought clarity from the franchise over his role in the 2026 season. The report further stated that the all-rounder has told the franchise that he doesn't mind in parting ways if he isn't in their plans for the upcoming campaign.

Badrinath has now shared his take on the matter, stating that Ashwin doesn't add any value to the team at the price he was signed for in the previous season. He further pointed out that the 38-year-old has already passed his peak and added that he should be released.

"I feel Ashwin adds value to CSK, but not at Rs 10 crore (Rs 9.75 crore). In the IPL, you need to see the price point and the player. He is definitely not at his peak. That is why I have been maintaining from the start that Ashwin has to be released," Badrinath said, speaking on his YouTube channel.

Badrinath also gave his opinion on rumours claiming that Sanju Samson will be joining CSK from Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2026 and stated that this move will create confusion in the team due to the uncertaintly surrounding MS Dhoni's future in the league.

"We don't know if MS Dhoni is going to continue playing or not. That decision has not yet been made. He might play a few matches, or he could play a few matches at Chepauk. There might be a brand value attached. He could attract a few brands. He might announce till the IPL season starts. The presence of Sanju Samson could create confusion, which is what I feel," Badrinath stated.

Ashwin had a dismal IPL 2025 campaign

Meanwhile, one of the reasons why CSK may consider releasing Ashwin from the team for next season is due to his poor performance in IPL 2025. The spinner only managed to pick up 7 wickets in 9 matches, maintaining an expensive economy rate of 9.12. It remains to be seen which franchise will Ashwin feature for next year in the cash-rich league.
