Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on January 14 joined Mumbai's Ranji Trophy 2024-25 squad as he turned up for an open nets practice session. Amidst uncertainty over his participation in Mumbai's next Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu & Kashmir, Rohit recorded a message for Mumbaikars asking them to join the celebrations of Wankhede Stadium's 50th anniversary. Rohit took a stroll down the memory lane as he talked about the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
"Hello everyone! For 19th of January, Wankhede will be celebrating [its] 50th anniversary. It is a very proud moment for all the Mumbaikars, especially who are involved in Mumbai cricket for so many years. Personally, for me, I have a very special connection with this ground, so many memories. I started playing my age-group cricket at this very venue. Since then, it has been a wonderful journey," Rohit said in a video posted by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on January 15.
"To see Wankhede grow over the years, when I played for the first time the whole stadium had its own charm. This venue has special memories involved with Indian cricket, Mumbai Indians and age-group cricket of Mumbai Cricket Association. I just want to wish everyone the best for coming years as well. Hopefully, we can create more and more memories at this venue," the Indian Test and ODI captain added.
While Rohit is yet to confirm his participation in the Ranji Trophy clash ahead of the ODI series against England, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been told to report to Mumbai's Ranji Trophy side. Jaiswal is set to play Ranji Trophy after Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) diktat for players to make themselves available for domestic cricket when they are not on national duty.
Rohit's form in Test cricket and next assignment
The 37-year-old has not been in good form in Test cricket. On the Australia tour, he scored 31 runs from five innings before he stood down as captain for the Sydney Test. During the Sydney Test, Rohit confirmed that he is not done with Test cricket yet. He expressed his desire to play in the five-Test series in England in June 2025.
Rohit will be seen on the international arena in the three-ODI series against Jos Buttler's England at home. The ODI series which is a preparatory series for the ICC Champions Trophy will begin on February 6 at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur.
