India tour of New Zealand: Fitness concerns over these 3 players delay India's ODI & Test squad announcement
According to the Times of India, the selectors are monitoring the recovery of fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant before finalising the teams. All these players have been dealing with injuries, which has resulted in the selectors waiting to have a clearer picture of their recovery.
A BCCI source told the Times of India that the CoE is prioritising caution. It was said:
“With both Pant and Krishna, the injuries don’t look severe at the outset. But the CoE doesn’t want to take any chances. That’s why both of them were given three-week timelines when they reported to CoE.”
The same source highlighted the desire to have Rana available across formats given his unique skill set.
Prasidh Krishna’s injury is a significant concern.
Prasidh Krishna raises crucial concerns
Prasidh Krishna’s availability is an important concern as the pacer experienced discomfort in his left hamstring during the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati on 30 September. Team management substituted him after just five overs as a precautionary measure. Krishna subsequently reported to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where medical staff assigned him a three-week recovery timeline.
It has been reported that while the injury does not appear severe, the CoE is adopting a deliberately cautious approach to avoid any setbacks. His fitness has been an important factor in the country’s preparations for the upcoming assignments against New Zealand.

Harshit Rana continues to recover
Harshit Rana, regarded as a valuable seam-bowling all-rounder who can bat in the lower middle order at number eight, has been rehabilitating at the CoE since July. Selectors and the team management are keen to include him in both the ODI and Test squads if he proves fully fit. The player is scheduled to undergo a return-to-play match simulation around 25 October, providing a key assessment window just days before the planned departure. His inclusion would strengthen India’s bowling depth and offer balance in both formats as the selectors monitor him closely.
Rishabh Pant's injury is another concern
Rishabh Pant presents another challenge for the selectors ahead of the series. The wicketkeeper-batter sustained a side strain during the Irani Cup and has been ruled out of the first two India A four-day matches against New Zealand A, which begin on 24 October. Like Krishna, Pant was given a three-week recovery timeline upon reporting to the CoE. He had been hoping to use the India A fixtures for match practice ahead of the Test series. The BCCI confirmed his absence from the early India A games, with a decision on later availability still pending.
The tour carries crucial importance beyond the bilateral results. The two-Test series forms part of India’s campaign in the World Test Championship cycle, while the ODI leg offers valuable preparation and competitive opportunities in overseas conditions. New Zealand’s challenging home pitches, known for assisting seam movement, will place a premium on fit and effective fast bowlers, underscoring the importance of Krishna and Rana’s availability.
According to sources as per TOI, the three players. Krishna, Pant, and Rana’s injuries were not that serious initially. However, later, the medical staff at the Centre of Excellence are taking a cautious approach and are giving them at least three weeks to recover.
