Persistent rain saw the fifth T20I between India and West Indies getting washed out

With this the five-match series ended in a 2-2 draw

The highly anticipated fifth and final T20 International between India and the West Indies ended in anti-climactic fashion at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as persistent, heavy rainfall forced match officials to abandon the decider. With no further play possible in the rain-truncated encounter, the high-scoring five-match T20I series ended deadlocked at 2–2.

The Bengaluru crowd had braced for a dramatic finale after an evening plagued by atmospheric frustration. Heavy showers over the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium caused an initial delay of two hours and fifteen minutes, pushing back the scheduled 7:00 PM IST start to 9:15 PM IST.

Under strict time constraints, match officials slashed the contest down to a explosive 9-over-per-side shootout, creating an electric atmosphere for a condensed shootout.

When the rain momentarily abated to allow the toss, West Indies skipper Shai Hope won the spin of the coin and opted to field first, citing the damp outfield and unpredictable pitch behavior under lights.

India lined up with two key team changes: Shivam Dube returned to reinforce middle-order muscle. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was drafted into the playing XI as an emergency inclusion following Arshdeep Singh’s shoulder knock in Hyderabad.

For Bhuvneshwar, stepping onto the turf in Bengaluru marked an emotional return. It officially ended a long 1,425-day exile from international cricket, making his first appearance in Indian blue since late 2022.

Tasked with setting a total in a shortened 9-over affair, India's top order adopted an uninhibited, ultra-aggressive mindset from the opening ball. Opening the innings, Ishan Kishan unleashed an absolute blitzkrieg, slamming 30 runs off just 10 deliveries. His knock featured three boundaries and two massive sixes, providing India an explosive launchpad. Alongside him, Sanju Samson maintained his rich vein of form, chipping in with an electric 16 off 7 balls (2 fours, 1 six).

Despite losing early wickets in pursuit of quick runs, with Abhishek Sharma falling for 6—India refused to take their foot off the pedal. Shreyas Iyer struck a steady 22 off 14 balls, while Naman Dhir delivered a jaw-dropping cameo, smashing 24 runs off just 6 balls at a astronomical strike rate of 400.00.

West Indies pacers Keemo Paul (2/34 in 2 overs) and Shamar Springer (2/17 in 1.4 overs) picked up crucial breakthroughs, but India's onslaught had propelled the scoreboard to a rampant 118/5 in just 7.4 overs.

Just as Naman Dhir cleared the ropes to push India’s run rate past 15 an over, the heavens opened up once again. Heavy rain lashed the venue, leaving puddles on the outfield. At 10:20 PM IST, with no possibility of drying the ground for West Indies' chase, umpires officially called off the match.

Five-Match T20I Series Recap

The 2-2 draw concluded one of the most explosive, boundary-laden T20I series hosted in India in recent years. Both teams traded heavy blows across four distinct venues before rain had the final say in Bengaluru.

1st T20I (Lucknow) – India Won by 8 Wickets

India started the series on a dominant note. A disciplined bowling effort restricted West Indies to 171. In reply, Shreyas Iyer anchored a clinical chase as India coasted to 172/2 in 14.4 overs to take a 1–0 lead.

2nd T20I (Ranchi) – West Indies Won by 6 Wickets

West Indies struck back in sensational style. Batting first, India posted a formidable 249/5. However, led by Shai Hope's power-hitting, West Indies pulled off a staggering chase, reaching 252/4 in just 18.3 overs.

3rd T20I (Indore) – India Won by 14 Runs

In another high-scoring thriller on a small ground, India amassed 223. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh took key wickets during the middle and death overs, restricting the Visitors to 209/7 to restore India's 2–1 advantage.

4th T20I (Hyderabad) – West Indies Won by 24 Runs

Shai Hope produced a masterpiece, scoring a 50-ball century (102) alongside Sherfane Rutherford (49*) to propel West Indies to 247/3. Despite Sanju Samson's 56 off 23 balls, Keemo Paul’s five-wicket haul dismantled India’s middle and lower order, bowling India out for 223.

Lessons for India: Addressing severe bowling vulnerabilities

While India's batting lineup displayed immense depth and strike-rate efficiency throughout the 5-match campaign, the series highlighted critical tactical red flags in their bowling division.

India’s bowling unit repeatedly surrendered control to West Indies’ power-hitters. Conceding 252 runs in 18.3 overs in Ranchi and 247 runs in 20 overs in Hyderabad exposed a lack of execution on flat decks.

Against clean hitters like Shai Hope, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd, Indian pacers struggled with wide-yorker accuracy and pace-off variations. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the younger pace attack often bowled predictable lengths that played into the opposition's hitting arcs.

The series demonstrated that when frontline pacers go for runs early in the Powerplay, India's secondary options struggle to alter the momentum. The emergency call-up of veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar underlined the management's desire for tactical control and seam execution in high-stakes encounters. As Team India prepares for upcoming New Zealand tour, addressing bowling concerns will be top priorities for the coaching staff.

India's next assignment will be New Zealand, where they will play five T20Is followed by as many ODIs and then two Tests.
