Indian cricketer and Delhi Capitals (DC) wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested on August 11 morning in connection with a case alleging sexual intercourse under the pretext of marriage.

Police had taken Porel into custody from Hooghly and, after a lengthy interrogation, formally arrested him on Tuesday afternoon. He was sent for a medical examination and later produced before the Chinsurah Court. An anticipatory bail hearing in the matter was also scheduled for August 11.

The arrest follows a complaint lodged at Mogra Police Station by a medical student. The woman alleged that Porel had sexual relations with her promising marriage and recorded their intimate moments. She further claimed that after their families discussed marriage, she found out about his alleged relationships with other women.

According to the FIR, which cites 19 sections, the incident took place in Delhi on April 2, 2026. The complaint states: “Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result... the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight... she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained.”

The Calcutta High Court had earlier ordered his arrest. To prevent circulation of the complainant’s photographs, the court also directed Mogra Police to seize all of Porel’s electronic devices.

Porel's cricket career 

The young wicketkeeper has played 32 first-class games, scoring 1,408 runs at an average of 31.28, featuring a solitary ton and 12 half-centuries. He has 833 runs from 21 List A innings, averaging 43.084, including two tons and five fifties. He has been a part of DC since the 2023 edition. He was a regular in the lineup in the 2024 and 2025 editions. From 35 IPL games, he has 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and strike rate of 145.36. He has four IPL fifties so far. In this year's edition, he got to play just four games.
