Injury replacement Abdullah Shafique becomes 1st Pakistan batter since 1977 to achieve this feat in West Indies

Not picked in Pakistan’s initial Test squad, picked as an injured Abdullah Fazal’s replacement, Abdullah Shafique achieved a rare feat in the ongoing second Test against West Indies. Shafique faced the snub of selectors when the squad for the Caribbean tour was announced. But, he was playing on the Caribbean soil when Fazal got injured, playing in the recently-concluded Global Super League T20 2026 for Lahore Qalandars. From T20s to Tests, he made the transition and went on to score an unbeaten 160. He became the first Pakistan batter since 1977 to cross the 150-run mark on Caribbean soil in Tests.

After skipper Babar Azam was run out, Shafique ran out of partners as Pakistan were bowled out for 387 in 115 overs on Day 3's play. He faced 323 balls, hitting 15 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 160. He is only the fifth Pakistan batter to score 150 or more in a Test innings on West Indies soil.

Hanif Mohammad holds the record with a 337-run knock in January 1959. In the same year, Wazir Mohammad scored 189. In March 1977, Majid Khan scored 167. During the 1958 tour, Saeed Ahmad had scored 150 as well.

Pakistan lost 8 wickets for 106 runs

On Day 3, Pakistan went from 281/2 to 387 all out. Sajid Khan contributed with a handy 30-run knock. Jomel Warrican bagged a six-wicket haul to reduce Pakistan's lead to just 43 runs. But, Shafique’s knock did not let Pakistan feel the absence of an injured Shan Masood who got injured in the series opener.

Sajid bags 4-fer, all eyes on Greaves-King

In the absence of an injured Brandon King, West Indies suffered a collapse as well. Kavem Hodge filled in as opener and scored 34 runs from 71 balls before falling to Ali Usman. Sajid Khan picked up a four-fer as West Indies lost six wickets for 103 runs. The in-form Justin Greaves will have the task to rescue the hosts and post a challenging target. King is likely to walk out to bat on Day 4.

Currently, Pakistan are in the driver's seat as West Indies have managed just a 60-run lead. However, they will be wary of West Indies’ lower order, especially Shamar Joseph who can do the damage with the bat as well.
