Trott will leave following the 2026 T20 World Cup

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott will step down from his position following the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Trott, who took over in July 2022, had an initial tenure of 18 months, but was given a 12-month extension in 2024 and again in 2025. H e has undouybtedly played a key roile in making Afghanistan a formidable team in white-ball cricket.

"ACB recognises that coaching transitions are a natural part of the global cricketing ecosystem. Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs. No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the board continues building toward long-term excellence. This decision comes as part of ACB's long term strategic planning for the next phase of the national team's growth," the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said in a statement.

Batting coach departs as well

Moreover, Afghanistan have also decided to part ways with batting coach Andrew Puttick, who joined the team earlier this year in January. He has previously worked as Pakistan's batting coach. With two important figures in the coaching set-up set to depart, it remains to be seen as to who will the ACB choose to replace them.

Meanwhile, Trott reflected on the time that he spent with the Afghanistan team and remarked that he is proud to have accomplished a lot with them. He also wished the team success in the future.

They also had an impressive campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup and defeated the likes of England, Sri Lanka and Pakistran. They were very close to making it to the semi-finals, but eventual champions Australia defeated them in their final league stage match to end their journey in the tournament.
