Kuldeep Yadav equals 68-year-old Test record with first Test fifer against West Indies, surpasses South African spinner

India’s left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav claimed a five-wicket haul in the ongoing second Test of the series against West Indies. On Day 3, Kuldeep claimed four wickets to complete his fifth five-wicket haul of Test career. He became the second left-arm wrist spinner in Test history to claim five-wicket hauls. 

The first left-arm wrist spinner to achieve the feat was England's Johnny Wardle. He did it in 28 Tests. South Africa's Paul Adams played 45 Tests and bagged four five-wicket hauls.

Kuldeep’s scalps in Delhi Test

Kuldeep’s first victim of the innings was Alick Athanaze on Day 2. Athanaze missed his fifty as he got caught trying to slog-sweep. On Day 3, he opened the bowling alongside Jasprit Bumrah. He broke the partnership with Shai Hope's wicket. His flighted googly missed Hope's bat and crashed into the off-stump. Tevin Imlach and Justin Greaves got out lbw in the first session.

Kuldeep completed his fifer with the wicket of tailender Jayden Seales. Kuldeep bowled a total of 26.5 overs including four maidens. He conceded 82 runs. West Indies were bowled out for 248. Skipper Shubman Gill enforced follow-on for the second consecutive Test. 

Kuldeep’s other four fifers in Test cricket

Kuldeep's maiden fifer was in 2018 against West Indies in Rajkot. In 2019, he took five wickets in Sydney. Three years, later he took five wickets for 40 runs against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022. Last year, he took five wickets for 72 runs against England in Dharamsala. 

Wardle and Adams’ Test numbers 

Yorkshire-born Wardle played 28 Tests, took 102 wickets at an average of 20.39, including five fifers. He represented England from 1948 to 1957.

Adams, the bowler with a unique bowling action, took 134 wickets from 45 Tests at an average of 32.87, including four fifers. He made his Test debut in 1995 and made his last Test appearance in 2004.
