India head coach Gautam Gambhir is known for his serious look on the field. He rarely shows emotion during matches, and his passion only becomes visible when India wins. Throughout his playing career, Gambhir was known for his short temper and has often gotten into arguments with other players during matches.

One of his most talked-about clashes was with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. When asked about his anger, Gambhir shared that during such on-field incidents, the first thing that comes to his mind is his children at home.
"I'm still aggressive, but there is one change now. Whenever I try to be – that first instinct is still pretty much there – but my first reaction is to take on the fight. But somewhere, with age, the first thing that comes to mind is 'Ghar pe bachhe hain' (There are kids at home)," Gambhir said on the most recent episode of 'Home town Hero' that aired during the India vs West Indies Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Gambhir's verbal spat with Virat Kohli
Gambhir was involved in a verbal spat with batting great Virat Kohli twice in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His last on-field verbal spat with Kohli occurred during IPL 2023, when Gambhir was the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Gambhir's tenure as India's head coach
Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of Team India after Rahul Dravid's tenure ended, following India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024. Under Gambhir’s leadership, India went on to win the Champions Trophy in 2025, their first ICC title under him, and then the Asia Cup in the same year. Now, Gambhir has his sights set on helping India win the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir's upcoming assignment
Gambhir, who is currently alongside the Shubman Gill-led side for the two-Test match series against West Indies. After completing this assignment, he will travel to Australia with Team India for the white-ball series. Team India will play a three-match ODI series followed by a five-match T20I, which is scheduled to start from October 19.
