Shubman Gill has created history as the Indian Test captain, just recording 3,000 runs in the longest format on Sunday during the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. 

The right-hander, aged 26 years and 349 days, became the fourth-youngest Indian to achieve the landmark, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar. He has also surpassed Kapil Dev to enter the Top 5 list. 

Gill reached the milestone with an average exceeding 43 from 43 Tests, having scored 11 centuries and eight half-centuries, underlining his strong form since taking over the captaincy. He entered the match needing only a handful of runs and duly got there, finishing the morning unbeaten as India built their innings.

Gill just needed seven runs to enter the elite list as he fell short in the opening Test, which was held in Galle. Talking about the match, India won the toss and decided to bat first, which was marked by Saransh Jain’s debut as he became the oldest Indian to debut in the Test format in the 21st century.
