West Indies' recently-retired wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has been named captain of Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise MI New York. Pooran will take over the captaincy from legendary West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard.
"Nicholas Pooran – the 29-year-old pocket dynamite, aka the MINY superstar – has been named the MI New York captain ahead of the 2025 season of the Cognizant Major League Cricket," said the franchise in a statement.
"This left-handed wicket-keeper batter is one of the world’s most feared batters going around. At the peak of his powers currently, he’s all set to take us to greater glories under his leadership."
In the previous season, MI New York were not at their best and were beaten by Texas Super Kings in the eliminator clash. The champions of the inaugural edition will take on Texas Super Kings in their campaign opener on June 13 at Oakland Coliseum, California.
Pooran's MLC record
Pooran is the highest run-scorer in the league's history. The Caribbean wicketkeeper-batter has scored 568 runs from 15 innings at an average of 47.33. He has one century and thee fifties to his name. His strike rate is 151.06. Also, he has hit 39 sixes, way ahead of any other in the league.
He also holds the record for highest score with 137 not out against Seattle Orcas in the inaugural edition. He helped MI New York win the MLC 2023 final by seven wickets. Coincidentally, he was captain of MI New York in the MLC 2023 final as well.
Pooran's recent form
Pooran was Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) second-highest run-scorer in the Indian Premier League 2025. The LSG vice-captain scored 524 runs from 14 innings at an average of 43.67, including five half-centuries. His strike rate was 196.25, one of the best in the season. Despite LSG not advancing to the playoffs, Pooran hit 40 sixes, most by any batter in the season.
