Australia's T20I squad faces a significant setback as all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been sidelined from the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand due to a back injury, a development that raises concerns for the team's composition and strategy, especially in a year that will host the T20 World Cup.
ESPNcricinfo reported that Stoinis experienced a back issue during a pre-match warm-up ahead of the second T20I against West Indies in Adelaide last Sunday. Despite the injury, Stoinis played and scored 16 runs while also picking three wickets with the ball.
Aaron Hardie named as replacement for Marcus Stoinis
In response to Stoinis's injury, newcomer Aaron Hardie has been called up as a replacement. Currently engaged in a Sheffield Shield game for Western Australia against Tasmania, Hardie is expected to meet up with the Australian squad in time for the first T20I, despite not traveling with the team initially.
Matthew Wade to miss 1st T20I
Compounding Australia's challenges, wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade will be absent for the series opener in Wellington due to family commitments, with the birth of his child imminent. Wade's absence leaves a gap in the squad, although he plans to return for the final two matches in Auckland.
Matthew Short's participation remains uncertain
Additionally, Matthew Short's participation is uncertain due to a minor hamstring strain incurred during the recent ODI series against West Indies, sidelining him from the T20Is. Hardie's inclusion could prove crucial, offering him an opportunity to prove his worth as a potential all-rounder, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon and Stoinis' availability in question.
Big names return for New Zealand T20Is
The series also marks the return of seasoned players Steve Smith and Travis Head, who missed the series against West Indies. Their comeback offers Australia a chance to fine-tune their lineup and strategy ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The T20I series against New Zealand kicks off on February 21 in Wellington, followed by two matches in Auckland, presenting Australia with a chance to assess their squad depth and adaptability amid these unexpected setbacks.
