Mike Hesson open to permanent Pakistan Test coaching role: ‘I’d be open to it…’

Mike Hesson has opened up about his desire to coach the Pakistan cricket team permanently. Pakistan’s white-ball head coach has raised the prospect of him becoming an all-format coach for the national side. While he has already revealed his desire, the final decision rests with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Hesson was appointed interim Test coach for the third and final match against England at Edgbaston after the Pakistan Cricket Board sacked Sarfaraz Ahmed following the series-clinching defeat at Lord’s. Pakistan went on to lose the third Test by eight wickets, completing a 0-3 whitewash.

Speaking after the match, the former New Zealand coach said:

“I’d be open to it, for sure.”

Hesson added:

“I love Test cricket and there’s enough talent around the system in Pakistan that if we provide some good direction, we can make some strides going forward. It’s not going to happen in a game or two but there’s some skill there I’d certainly be considering looking after.”

Despite Pakistan’s recent loss and ongoing struggles, it seems like Hesson is already impressed with the talent the squad holds and believes that he can make changes nd turn the tables. Hesson, who has been Pakistan’s limited-overs coach since May 2025, noted that discussions with the PCB and selectors are yet to take place.

Hesson’s immediate focus remains the upcoming Asian Games white-ball commitments. He also confirmed he had been approached earlier this year about England’s vacant Test coaching role but made clear his commitment to Pakistan until at least the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The PCB has not yet indicated whether it will offer Hesson the permanent red-ball position or combine the roles. For now, Hesson wants to stay in the roles for several years and doesn't want to move anywhere else amid the offer from England.
