On Wednesday, October 2, media outlets reported that Team India had suffered a big setback due to Shami's alleged knee injury, which was said to sideline him for 6-8 weeks. A source within the BCCI confirmed that Shami had indeed been dealing with a swollen knee.

"Why these type of baseless rumors? I'm working hard and trying my level best to recover. Neither the BCCI nor me have mentioned that I am out of the Border Gavaskar series. I request the public to stop paying attention to such news from unofficial sources. Please stop and don’t spread such fake fake fake & fake news, especially without my statement," Shami's social media post read.

Shami has been sidelined from competitive cricket since the 2023 Cricket World Cup final due to an ankle injury. The 34-year-old missed the South Africa tour and the home series against England, and underwent surgery in February. This surgery forced him to miss both the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) and the T20 World Cup. Shami was anticipated to return to action this month in the Ranji Trophy and potentially join the Indian Test squad for either the second or third Test against New Zealand before departing for Australia. However, there remains uncertainty regarding his fitness to participate in Bengal's season opener on October 11.

India's upcoming tour to Australia promises to be a thrilling five-match Test series as they strive to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the fifth consecutive time. This will be the first time in 32 years that these two cricketing rivals have faced off in a five-match Test series. The series will commence at Perth's Optus Stadium, followed by a pink-ball Test in Adelaide. The remaining three matches will be held in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
