Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) officials will meet their former skipper MS Dhoni ahead of the upcoming mega auction which is scheduled to take place next month. The 43-year-old wicketkeeper batter has not confirmed his availability for the upcoming season of the marquee event.
CSK will take their call on retention after meeting Dhoni. A close source close to CSK told Sports Tak that CSK management approached Dhoni and he said he is not available till the 28th so the officials are expected to meet him either on the 29th or 30th and then will finalise retentions.
IPL governing body BCCI has given October 31 as the deadline by which the ten franchises have to submit their list of retained players to the IPL ahead of the mega auction, and this year Dhoni is eligible to be retained by CSK as an uncapped player. That was made possible after the IPL brought back a rule that had been scrapped in 2021, according to which a player can be considered uncapped if they have been retired from international cricket for five years.
Dhoni last played an international game in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal, he announced his international retirement in 2020. Dhoni is one of the most successful IPL captains, CSK won five IPL titles under his captaincy which is joint most by any team in the history of a cash-rich league. He stepped down from the captaincy before the opener clash of IPL 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the franchise appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as his successor to lead the franchise.
Dhoni has scored 161 runs in 14 IPL matches with a highest score of 37 not out. Dhoni has an average of 73 in the last edition of the tournament. He smashed 13 sixes and 14 fours.
Sports Tak earlier reported that the mega auction for IPL will take place in Riyadh on 24th of 25th of next month.
