New Zealand women's team all-rounder Thamsyn Newton has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. The 30-year-old hung her boots after playing professional cricket for 14 years.
Newton's last appearance in professional cricket was in Women's One-Day Competition for Central Districts against Otago. She was dismissed for a three-ball duck and did not bowl a single over.
Newton made her T20I debut in 2015 against Sri Lanka and bowled an economical spell. On her ODI debut, she dismissed Australian opener Nicole Bolton. She was part of White Ferns' squads for T20 World Cup 2016 and ODI World Cup 2017.
Newton’s ODI and T20I numbers
Her last ODI and T20I appearance was in 2017 and 2021 respectively. From 10 ODIs, she has 11 wickets at an average of 25, including a five-wicket haul against Pakistan at home. With the bat, she has scored 57 runs at an average of 9.50.
She has played 15 T20Is and claimed nine wickets at an average of 14. She has managed to score just 22 runs from four innings. Known for her big-hitting, she did not hit a single six in her T20I career.
Newton in domestic tournaments
She has won New Zealand's Super Smash title with Wellington four times. She also won New Zealand's 50-over domestic competition, Hallyburton Johnstone Shield once each with Wellington and Central Districts.
Newton’s WBBL record
She played just one season for Perth Scorchers in Women's Big Bash League (WBBL). In 2017/18 season, she has scored 50 runs from just eight innings. She has six wickets at an average of 23.33.
Career in rugby too
Newton has not been limited to just cricket. She has represented Wellington Pride and Hawke's Bay Tui in New Zealand's domestic women's rugby union competition, Farah Palmer Cup.
