The path to the 2027 ODI World Cup is taking shape, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) locking in the timeline for its qualifiers ahead of the showpiece tournament. According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, the 10-team ODI World Cup 2027 qualifiers will run from February 22 to March 23, though the host nation for these crucial fixtures has yet to be announced by the governing body.

ODI World Cup Qualifiers slated from February 22 to March 23

Under this preliminary setup, a single direct ticket to the expanded 14-team flagship tournament will be up for grabs for the qualifier's winner. The eventual champion will earn an immediate spot in the showpiece event scheduled across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Meanwhile, the teams finishing second, third, and fourth will retain a lifeline, moving forward to compete in the World Cup's opening Super Series stage.

Winners of the Qualifiers to earn the main draw

The ten-team field for the qualifying tournament will be assembled through multiple pathways. The bottom two Full Members in the ICC ODI rankings will be forced into the event alongside the top four finishers from CWC League 2. The remaining four spots will be filled via a secondary Qualifier Playoff, featuring the bottom four teams from League 2 and four sides advancing from the Challenge League.

All eyes remain on two-time champion West Indies as they scramble to avoid the qualifier altogether. The top eight teams on the ICC ranking table as of September 30, 2026, will secure automatic berths alongside co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, filling ten direct slots before four final teams join the expanded main event.

Currently sitting 10th in the rankings with just two ODIs left before the cutoff, the Caribbean side’s direct qualification hinges partly on 12th-ranked Ireland, who are contesting a five-match series against Afghanistan. An Afghan series victory would virtually lock in the Windies' direct ticket; however, a dominant 4-1 or 5-0 sweep for the Irish would force West Indies to win both of their remaining fixtures to guarantee passage.
