Pat Cummins joins Greg Chappell in unwanted list after historic Bangladesh defeat

In a series of big events, Bangladesh enjoyed a historic moment in Test cricket on Sunday, August 16 after recording a dominant nine-wicket win against Australia at Darwin's Marrara Cricket Ground. The memorable result gave the visitors their maiden red-ball triumph on Australian soil, while also becoming only their second Test win over the Aussies overall.

With this, Australia skipper Pat Cummins added an unwanted record in his captaincy portfolio, as he has become only second skipper after Greg Chappell to lose home Tests against two different Asian teams.

During Greg Chappel's tenure as Australia Test skipper, the team endured three defeats on home conditions. Two of those defeats losses came against Pakistan, in Sydney in January 1977 and Melbourne in December 1981, while India gave Chappell's side the other defeat in Melbourne in February 1981.

Cummins has now overseen two Test defeats as Australia captain home soil. His first came against India in 2021.

Big boost for Bangladesh in WTC

The landmark result in Darwin also strengthened Bangladesh's position in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. The nine-wicket win over the Pat Cummins-led side took their overall tally to 60 points, while their points percentage jumped from 58.33 to 66.67. However, the win did not change their place in the table, with Bangladesh continuing to claim the fourth place.

Bangladesh entered the Darwin Test on the back of an dominant show against Pakistan, where they secured two back-to-back Test wins.

On the other hand, Australia continue to lead the WTC 2025-27 standings despite their shock defeat to Bangladesh. The setback, however, has seen their points percentage fall considerably from 87.50 to 77.77. The 2023 WTC champions have now picked up two losses in nine games during the current cycle.
