Petrol bomb attack on Shakib Al Hasan's house in Magura, stones pelted; windows vandalised

Tensions erupted in Magura on Wednesday night as a group of attackers targeted the residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex-Magura-1 MP Shakib Al Hasan. The assault unfolded around 9:00 pm, coming shortly after Shakib was seen participating in a virtual press conference hosted by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to local authorities citing eyewitnesses, the perpetrators hurled a petrol bomb-style explosive at the upper frame of the house's southern iron gate. While the device instantly burst into flames, quick-thinking neighbours rushed to douse the fire before it could spread, preventing significant harm to the property.

Abdulla Al Mamun, the officer-in-charge at Magura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that assailants on motorcycles orchestrated the strike, hurling an unidentified projectile at the residence. He noted that authorities are actively monitoring the environment in the aftermath of the event.

Addressing the nature of the explosive, Mamun refrained from officially labeling it a petrol bomb at this stage. He emphasized that law enforcement must complete a formal investigation to determine exactly what type of device was thrown.

Preliminary findings suggest the property was entirely unoccupied when the attack took place.

Shakib's meeting with Sheikh Hasina triggered attack 

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of young men threw stones at Shakib Al Hasan's property, shattering several windows, before dousing the top of the main iron gate with petrol and setting it ablaze. Neighbours managed to douse the fire before significant damage occurred, and law enforcement confirmed the residence was empty of family members, as only a caretaker has lived on the premises since August 5.
