Rahul Dravid has reaffirmed his deep affection for Test cricket; however, the former captain and coach has also stressed the vital role of T20 in expanding the sport’s global reach. The 53-year-old has suggested a secret plan to expand the sport on the global level.

Speaking recently on Jiostar, Dravid said:

“Personally, I love Test cricket; it’s always going to be the number one format of the game.”

Dravid added:

“But, you have to be realistic enough to realise that if you want to grow the game of cricket and not make it a niche game that’s played only by a few countries.”

The cricket legend further said:

“We want the next generation to be able to enjoy, follow and play the game, then T20 is a great format to be able to promote the game.”

The comments come amid ongoing discussions about balancing the traditional longer format with the commercial and audience appeal of shorter versions. Dravid, who is also involved with a franchise in the European T20 Premier League, has consistently advocated for young players to develop skills across all formats to help sustain Test cricket’s future.

Dravid’s measured view highlights a familiar tension in modern cricket: protecting the purity and depth of the five-day game while embracing T20’s ability to attract new fans and markets.
