India's batting juggernaut Rohit Sharma has shockingly announced his Test retirement right ahead of the five-match series against England. The big announcement came in middle of the IPL 2025 and ahead of India's tour of England, which is scheduled to start from June 20.

Rohit Sharma took to Instagram to announce his retirement.

“Hello everyone! I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support through the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format,” Rohit's Instagram story read.

Rohit Sharma's final appearance in Test cricket was in the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Unfortunately for him and the Indian team, they suffered a defeat in that encounter. Subsequently, he was not selected for the fifth Test of the series, which ultimately resulted in India conceding the series to Australia with a 1-3 margin.

Over the course of his Test career, Rohit Sharma accumulated 4,301 runs across 116 innings. His batting average in the longest format stands at 40.57, and his record includes a commendable tally of 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

However, Rohit experienced a significant dip in form in the year 2024. Across eight Test matches and 15 innings, his batting average plummeted to a mere 10.93. This was the lowest average recorded by any top-seven batsman who played a minimum of 15 innings in the 2024-25 Test season, highlighting his struggles with the red ball.

Adding to his difficulties, Rohit was frequently dismissed for low scores during this period. In 10 out of his 15 innings in 2024, he failed to reach double digits. This count of single-digit dismissals was the highest among all top-seven batsmen in the season, further underscoring his inconsistent performances.

Rohit captained India in a total of 24 Test matches, leading the team to victory in 12 and suffering defeat in nine. Notably, in June 2024, Rohit had also announced his retirement from T20 International cricket following India's seven-run victory over South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Currently, Rohit is shining bright with the bat for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Notably, Jasprit Bumrah might be seen leading Team India in the five-match Test series against England.
