In a massive turn of event, Team India is reportedly set to go with a new captain in the Test series against England which is scheduled to start from June 20. As per a report in Indian Express, the national selectors have opted for a change in leadership for India's Test team, deciding to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy. While the captaincy change is confirmed, it is yet to be determined whether Rohit Sharma will still travel to England as a specialist opening batsman. The report suggests that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will support the selectors' decision.
Rohit Sharma to be removed from India Test captaincy ahead of England series
This move is reportedly not motivated by the need for a generational shift within the team or to phase out older players. Instead, it is understood to stem from a review of Rohit Sharma's recent performances and his form specifically in red-ball cricket. It has been learned that the 38-year-old will remain a key part of India's plans for the One Day International format.
India suffered back-to-back Test series against New Zealand and Australia. While they were clean swept by New Zealand 0-3 followed by a 1-4 drubbing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, India went on to win the Champions Trophy 2025 title under Rohit which sparked a speculation that the veteran batter will lead the Men in Blue in the England tour. But it seems that the selectors had a discussion with the superstar player on the captaincy transition.
Notably, the five-match Test series between India and England is scheduled to kick off at the Leeds Cricket Ground in Headingley, with the first match taking place from June 20 to 24.
