Root holds narrow one-run lead over Brook in WTC with Shubman Gill closely chasing

Joe Root holds a slender one-run lead over Harry Brook as the leading run-scorer in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. England defeated Pakistan by eight wickets recently, completing a 3-0 series sweep in the three-match Test series. Root led the side with 62 while Jordan Cox added an unbeaten 59 as the hosts chased the target of 130.

The English side’s job was done in just 25 overs while Root became the top scorer. According to the latest figures, the England skipper has scored 1,272 runs in 30 innings, while his England teammate Brook sits just behind on 1,271 runs from 29 innings. 

India’s Shubman Gill occupies third place with 1,024 runs in only 17 innings. The tight contest between the two England batsmen comes after England’s recent Test series against Pakistan. With India having more matches remaining in the cycle than England, Gill remains well positioned to challenge for the top spot later in the championship.
