South Africa have announced their playing XI for opening match of the three-match ODI series against England which is set to be contested on September 2. The Proteas come into the series following a successful 2-1 victory against Australia and now will be setting their sights on claiming victory over The Three Lions.
South Africa will be missing both Matthew Breetzke and Kagiso Rabada in the first ODI against England as both of them are out due to niggles. Notably, Breetzke had scored two half-centuries in the recently-concluded series against Australia while Rabad had missed out on the entire assiognment due to a right ankle inflammation.
Batter Tony de Zorzi has replaced Breetzke from the XI while the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger, Keshav Maharaj, Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder will be the bowlers South Africa will be playing with in the first ODI. On the other hand, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis will be leading the team in the batting department.
Bavuma's take on Miller's exclusion
Meanwhile, Bavuma had confirmed that veteran batter David Miller is still 'in the mix' for ODIs despite not being included in the squad for the series against England. The South Africa captain further remarked that it was Miller's involvement in The Hundred which precluded him from selection for the England assignment. Notably, the left-hand batter had featured for the Northern Superchargers in the eliminator against Trent Rockets on Saturday.
"What I understand is that those communications were done during his contract times, in terms of him being available during this period for the Hundred. Essentially, he wasn't available for selection - but I stand by correction around that. David's still within the mix in the ODI stuff, if that answers your question," Bavuma said ahaed of 1st ODI against England.
"The Australia tour would've coincided with the Hundred. I guess any international commitments that occurred during the Hundred, David wasn't available for. Unfortunately, the one-day [series], it clashes: he wasn't part of our build-up. But then with the T20 stuff, the Hundred is done, he'll fall back into the team," he added.
South Africa playing XI for 1st ODI against England: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Corbin Bosch, Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger.
