The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a record prize pool for the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup. The tournament which is set to be held in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2, will have a total prize pool of USD 13.88 million. This is a staggering 297 per cent increase from the previous edition that was held in 2022 and had the total prize pool of 3.5 million.
The winning team will be receiving USD 4.48 million while the runner-up will get USD 2.24 million. On the other hand, the semi-finalists will get USD 1.12 million while each win in the group stage offers a team USD 34, 314 and finally, even the last-placed team in the tournament will be getting USD 250,000.
“This announcement marks a defining milestone in the journey of women’s cricket. This four-fold increase in prize money is a landmark moment for women’s cricket and reflects our clear commitment to its long-term growth," Jay Shah, the Chairman of ICC, said on Monday.
"Our message is simple, women cricketers must know they will be treated on par with men if they choose this sport professionally. The uplift underscores our ambition to deliver a world-class ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and to inspire the next generation of players and fans. Women’s cricket is on a remarkable upward trajectory, and with this step we are confident the momentum will accelerate," he added.
"We call upon all stakeholders, fans, media, partners, and Member Boards, to join us in championing the women’s game and ensuring it receives the recognition and respect it deserves," he further stated.
Prize pool for the competition is higher than Men's World Cup
Notably, the total prize pool for the Women's World Cup is USD 3.88 million higher than that of the previous edition of ICC Men's ODI World Cup which was held in India in 2023. Even the winners of the upcoming mega tournament will take home more money than what eventual champions Australia were rewarded with in 2023. The Baggy Greens had been given USD 4 million after winning the tournament almost two years ago.
Meanwhile, the Women's World Cup will begin with the two hosts India and Sri Lanka facing-off against each other on September 30 at the Barsapara stadium in Guwahati. The tournament will consist of eight teams and the group stage will be played in round-robin format with the last four teams on the standings getting eliminated and the top four going through to the semi-finals.
