In a big setback for South Africa their all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action right after Proteas' 98-run win over Australia at the Cazalys Stadium on August 20. The International Cricket Council (ICC) put out a press release after the conclusion of the match to confirm the development.
South Africa's Prenelan Subrayen reported for suspect bowling action
According to the ICC statement, match officials raised concerns about the 31-year-old off-spinner's action in their match report. Subrayen is now required to undergo an independent assessment at an ICC-accredited facility to determine if his action is legal. This development is a major blow to South Africa's bowling lineup.
In his ODI debut for South Africa, Subrayen impressed with the ball as the off-spinner maintained good lines and lengths throughout his spell.
Subrayen's first ODI wicket was a significant one, as he dismissed the explosive Australian batter Travis Head. On the first ball of the eighth over, Subrayen outsmarted Head with a well-bowled delivery, leading to the batter being stumped by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton. The debutant completed his full quota of 10 overs, finishing with figures of 1 for 46.
This ODI match was not his first international appearance for South Africa. Subrayen had previously played one Test match against Zimbabwe in July 2025, where he took four wickets.
In an official media release, ICC confirmed that match officials raised "specified concerns about the legality" of South African spinner Subrayen's bowling action during the first ODI against Australia. As a result, Subrayen must now undergo an independent assessment of his action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility. He will need to receive clearance before he can resume playing international cricket.
"South Africa off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action in the first ODI against Australia played on Aug 19, Tuesday, in Cairns," the ICC said in an official media release.
"The match officials' report specified concerns about the legality of Subrayen's action. The bowler will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility," the statement added.
In case Subrayen ends up missing the remainder of the ODI series, the most probable candidates to replace him are fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch and left-arm spinner Senuran Muthuswamy.
Talking about the match, South Africa crushing Australia by 98 runs in the series opener to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match outing. South Africa, while batting first, posted a daunting total of 296/8 riding on fifties from Aiden Markram (82), Temba Bavuma (65) and Matthew Breetzkee (57). In reply, Australia surrendered to South Africa's disciplined bowling and were folded for 198, thanks to Keshav Maharaj's superb 5/33.
