Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu has been rewarded for two centuries including a record-breaking unbeaten 140 in historic series win over New Zealand at home. Athapaththu became the first Sri Lankan batter to rise to no.1 spot in women's ICC ODI rankings after winning ‘player of the series’ in the three-ODI series at home.
With 758 points, Athapaththu rose from the no.7 spot to the top after Sri Lanka’s first-ever ODI series win over New Zealand in ODIs. She has become the second Sri Lankan (male and female) after former opener Sanath Jayasuriya to claim the top spot in batter’s rankings. Jayasuriya stayed on top for 181 days between September 200 and May 2003.
Athapaththu's rise has led to Beth Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt, Natalie Sciver, Meg Lanning and India's Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana slip one place each. India captain Harmanpreet has 716 points whereas Mandhana has 714. Both the captain and the vice-captain have a chance to improve their rankings in the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh starting July 16.
England's Tammy Beaumont benefitted from Amelia Kerr's below par performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. The White Ferns batter slipped to 11th position as Beaumont entered the top 10 rankings. Meanwhile, despite losing the series New Zealand captain, Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates moved up one place each to 13th and 15th.
How Indians fare in other rankings
In the ODI bowling rankings, India have left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakward (617 rating points) and Deepti Sharma (589 points) at eighth and 10th spot respectively.
In the ODI all-rounder rankings, India's Deepti Sharma remained static at no.6 with 322 rating points. The only movement in top 10 was Devine moving up one spot to ninth. Pakistan's Nida Dar slipped one position.
With three-T20I series against Bangladesh starting July 9, Indian players have a chance to move up in T20I rankings. Mandhana is on the third spot with 722 rating points. However, it would take a herculean effort to surpass Mooney who is second spot with 780 rating points.
In T20I bowling rankings, Deepti has 729 points. She rose to no.4 after Australia's Darcie Brown slipped two positions. Only other Indian in top 10 is Renuka Singh who has been dropped from the side. In T20I all-rounder rankings, Deepti is on third place with 393 rating points, just behind West Indies' Hayley Matthews who has 395 rating points.
