Ahmedabad in all likelihood will host the T20 World Cup 2026 final

India, the defending champions, are scheduled to co-host the T20 World Cup 2026 with Sri Lanka in February-March 2026. India haven't hosted the T20 World Cup since 2016 edition.

Ahmedabad to host 2026 T20 World Cup final

Although the official International Cricket Council (ICC) schedule is yet to come, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly submitted a venue proposal. As per an Indian Express report, this proposal suggests the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as the venue for the 2026 T20 World Cup final, a stadium that previously hosted the summit clash of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Australia broke Men in Blue's heart to claim their sixth trophy. A formal announcement from the board is expected soon.

The BCCI's proposal to the ICC suggests consolidating all matches across just five major Indian venues. These shortlisted stadiums are the Arun Jaitley Stadium (Delhi), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), the Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), and the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai). Notably, this selection would mean that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will not be included in the list of host cities for the T20 World Cup 2026 matches.

BCCI has proposed a focused approach to hosting the tournament, suggesting that each of the five shortlisted venues in India will host six matches during the T20 World Cup. This strategy aims to ensure an equitable distribution of games among the Tier 1 cities. Crucially, due to an existing agreement regarding sporting ties, all of Pakistan's matches in the tournament, including the league stage, are slated to be held at a neutral venue within co-host Sri Lanka.

The planning extends to the knockout stage with diplomatic contingencies in place. The Indian Express report also suggests that the semi-final would be hosted in Sri Lanka should the co-host team reach that stage. Furthermore, the proposed venue for the final, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, is subject to a last-minute change. If Pakistan qualify for the final, the title match will be shifted out of India to a neutral venue in Sri Lanka.
