MS Dhoni became the ninth Indian male cricketer and 11th Indian overall to get inducted to the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Hall of Fame on Monday. This is one of the biggest honours that can be given to a player by the global body and it only helps in solidifying Dhoni's legendary status.
Following Dhoni's induction, his former India and Chennai Super Kings teammate Suresh Raina congratulated him with a hearfelt post on his official Instagram account. The duo were in India's playing XI for several years and Raina was also in the squad that triumphed in the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy under the leadership of Dhoni.
"The Legend Enters the Hall! @mahi7781 incredible career & contributions to cricket have earned him a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame. From electrifying finishes to game-changing leadership, Dhoni bhai has left an indelible mark on the sport. His calm demeanor, razor-sharp instincts & unwavering commitment have inspired millions. A true icon & legend of the game, his legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers," Raina wrote in his Instagram post.
Dhoni's incredibly successful tenure as India captain
Dhoni is undoubtedly the most successful captain in India's history with the team having won three ICC tournaments under his leadership. He is also the only captain in history to guide his team to all three major ICC titles. The now 43-year-old first captained the side to the 2007 T20 World Cup triumph, where they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling final.
Following this, Dhoni played a crucial knock of 91 runs in the 2011 ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka and guided the Indian team to only their second World Cup title and their first in 28 years. Finally, his remarkable captaincy took the spotlight in the 2013 Champions Trophy final against England where the Men in Blue defended a modest target of 130 runs.
Dhoni dominated the most in the one-day format and captained the Indian team to a total of 110 victories. He is only behind the tally of former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, who recorded 165 ODI victories as captain.
