Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Test cricket? Rahul Dravid urges patience over future for teenage sensation

Indian cricket legend has called for restraint in discussions about a possible Test debut for 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The former player doesn't doubt Sooryavanshi’s ability, but has been stressing the need for further development in red-ball cricket, as he has asked people to wait until the rising star is fully prepared.

Rahul Dravid has full faith in Sooryavanshi, but the former Indian captain and coach wants people to let the teenager not come under pressure at this early age.

Dravid recently said on Jiostar:

“With Vaibhav, you’ve got to be patient.”

Dravid added:

“He’s only 15 years old, and from what I’ve seen of the kid, I have no doubt that, given the opportunity to practice and play domestic cricket and a couple of seasons of red-ball cricket, he will be able to hold his own in a Test match team.”

Sooryavanshi, born in March 2011 in Bihar, has already made history as India’s youngest men’s international after debuting in T20Is earlier this year. He starred for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, where Dravid previously coached him, and has impressed with explosive white-ball performances.

While the teenager has shown glimpses in domestic first-class cricket and expressed a desire to play all formats, Dravid has explained the importance of balanced development. He has previously noted that Test cricket’s future depends on multi-format players like Sooryavanshi gaining proper experience in the longer game.

Selectors are expected to continue monitoring his progress through the domestic season, including competitions such as the Duleep Trophy, before any consideration of a step up to the Test side.
