India spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been named as Tamil Nadu captain for the upcoming edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), which is scheduled to start from November 26 across the country. The 34-year-old played a crucial role in India's 2-2 T20I series win against Australia, picking 5 wickets across three completed matches. 

Varun Chakravarthy's match-winning performances

Notably, Varun Chakravarthy is in the form of his life since making the international comeback as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner ended his campaign as the highest wicket taker in the ICC Champions Trophy with nine scalps in three outings, where the Men in Blue defeated New Zealand to win the title. After that, he also played a crucial role for the Suryakumar Yadav-led T20I side in the Asia Cup 2025, picking five wickets in five matches.

Varun Chakravarthy, who made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in 2021, has played 29 T20Is where he picked up 45 wickets, conceding 706 runs with best bowling figures of 5/17.

Narayan Jagadeesan appointed as Varun Chakravarthy's deputy

India batter Narayan Jagadeesan will be Chakravarthy’s deputy for the country’s premier T20 tournament, where left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore and promising Andre Siddarth are also part of the squad. 

Tamil Nadu, who are having a modest performance in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26. They are placed in Elite Group D alongside Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Tripura, Jharkhand and Saurashtra. Tamil Nadu will start their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign against Rajasthan in Ahmedabad
