Rohit Sharma was awarded Player of the series against Australia.

Australia defeated India 2-1 in three match ODI series.

India veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane advised the BCCI and Gautam Gambhir that the team needs experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their ODI setup, considering their experience in white ball cricket. Notably, after BCCI announced Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in ODIs, there were speculations about the duo's future in the 50-over format.

However, Rohit ended the three-match series as the highest run-getter and won the Player of the Series award. On the other hand, Kohli, after successive ducks, scored an unbeaten 71 in Sydney in the third ODI.

“When you have guys like Rohit and Virat, who have won so many matches for India especially in white ball cricket, you need that experience in the team. You cannot go with all the newcomers or the young ones in the team. Young blood is important, but if you have experience, the team will do well. It is especially the case in red ball cricket. I was really happy to see Rohit getting that 100,” Rahane told Indian Express.

Rahane also slammed the rumours claiming that his position in the Mumbai team was shaky.

“There are many unwanted people. When they don’t know about the game, they still talk about a player who has been playing consistently with a good attitude and intensity. I always want to do well for Mumbai. They don’t know what it takes. As an international cricketer who has played for so many years, I think something clicked for me. But the support of my family and kids has been massive. They’ve always been with me. They said, ‘Daddy, you can do it’,” he said.

Ajinkya Rahane's last international outing

Rahane, who captained Team India that defeated Australia on their soil for the second time, donned the India jersey in 2023 during a Test match against West Indies. The Mumbai batter has scored 5077 runs in 85 Test matches, including 12 hundreds and 26 half-centuries.
