It's a homecoming for Yuvraj Singh as the Delhi Capitals have appointed the former India all-rounder as their assistant and batting coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The move marks Yuvraj’s first formal coaching role and brings him back into the Capitals fold alongside head coach Sourav Ganguly.

The 44-year-old, a two-time World Cup winner with India, will work directly under Ganguly, who was named head coach earlier this month. The appointments are part of an important coaching staff overhaul as the franchise prepares for a new cycle under the alternating ownership arrangement between co-owners GMR and JSW Sports.

Yuvraj Singh talks about ‘old association’ with the franchise

Following the homecoming, Yuvraj expressed that he is excited for the new chapter.  In a statement released by the franchise, he said:

“I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life with the Delhi Capitals."

Yuvraj added:

“I have an old association with the franchise and know the owners well, which makes this a special opportunity for me.”

The former Indian cricketer then went on to talk about his reunion with Ganguly. He added:

“I’m also looking forward to teaming up with Dada, this time as coaches. Coaching is something I am truly passionate about, and I cannot wait to get started with this extremely talented squad. I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting journey for me, and I look forward to contributing to the team’s success.”

The reunion carries historical weight for both of the former players. Yuvraj made his international debut under Ganguly’s captaincy in 2000 and went on to become one of India’s most impactful middle-order batters and left-arm spinners. He played pivotal roles in India’s victories at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Their partnership now shifts from the dressing room of the national team to the coaching box of an IPL franchise still chasing its first title.

Yuvraj Singh and Delhi Capitals reunion

As mentioned, it's a homecoming for the former player. In 2015, the IPL franchise was then known as Delhi Daredevils. It signed Yuvraj for a then-record ₹16 crore at the IPL auction, making him the most expensive player in the league’s history at the time. He featured in all 14 matches that season. Across his IPL career, the legendary player was involved in 132 matches, in which he recorded 2,750 runs and took 36 wickets.

Beyond the numbers, Yuvraj has spent recent years mentoring several of India’s current and emerging stars. Players including Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh have publicly credited him with helping refine their batting. Meanwhile, following the addition, franchise chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal recalled his quality and stated the importance of the signing. As he talked about Yuvraj’s experience in the game, he said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Yuvi to the Delhi Capitals family,” Jindal said. “Yuvi is one of Indian cricket’s greatest match-winners and someone who has played a pivotal role in mentoring many of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket today.”

Jindal also talked about the winning mentality of Yuvraj and how he manages to connect the players. He added:

“His experience, winning mindset, and ability to connect with players will be invaluable to our squad.”

Co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi also welcomed the move, noting Yuvraj’s remarkable career, competitive spirit and deep understanding of the game as assets that would strengthen the coaching setup. Yuvraj retired from the game in 2019 and is a veteran of 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is, as well as a multiple World Cup winner. He has mentored several emerging stars from the country in recent years and will be using his expertise in the game with the IPL franchise.

Coaching changes come after struggling form of Delhi Capitals

The coaching changes come after Delhi Capitals finished sixth in IPL 2026 and fifth the previous season under head coach Hemang Badani. The franchise has struggled to convert promising campaigns into consistent playoff appearances in recent years. Ganguly’s elevation to head coach and the addition of Yuvraj signal a clear intent to inject experience and a winning culture into the dugout. Ganguly himself brings familiarity with the Capitals ecosystem. He previously served as advisor in 2019, later as director of cricket, and coached the franchise’s SA20 sister team, Pretoria Capitals. His appointment aligns with the two-year operational cycle now controlled by the JSW group.

Although this will be Yuvraj’s first formal coaching job, he has previously mentored the likes of Shubman Gill, Prabhsimran Singh, Abhishek Sharma and more. In addition to these big names, Rishabh Pant also took the guidance of the former player as he struggled to find his rhythm.

Meanwhile, Pant has also returned to the team after he was swapped with left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the Lucknow Super Giants. While he took some lessons from Yuvraj, it's time to be coached by him professionally and formally.
