Former Indian pace maestro Zaheer Khan is emerging as a top contender to lead the national selection committee should the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decide against renewing Ajit Agarkar's contract.

While early speculation pointed to VVS Laxman—the current head of the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence—as the preferred choice to step into the chief selector seat, the demanding travel schedule required for the position may deter him from taking it on. Should Laxman opt out, Zaheer Khan stands out as the primary alternative, putting the 2011 World Cup winner in prime position to helm India's selection panel.

Ajit Agarkar nearing end of 3-year stint

A major reshuffle could be on the horizon for Indian cricket, with long-serving Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman in line for a newly created Director of Cricket post. However, key structural decisions, including potential roles for candidate Zaheer Khan, remain tied to Ajit Agarkar’s future as chief selector. Agarkar reaches the end of his initial three-year tenure this September, and board officials are scheduled to review whether to offer him a one-year extension in a high-level meeting following the ongoing India-Sri Lanka Test series.

A clear divide has emerged between India's team management and cricket administrators regarding Rohit Sharma's future. The rift became public after BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stepped in to quash retirement rumors, asserting that Sharma remains a core part of the setup and will continue representing the nation as long as he fits into the team's long-term plans. Saikia’s public intervention highlighted a sharp disagreement in strategic vision between the board and the decision-makers. Reports indicate that Agarkar’s panel was particularly dissatisfied with the secretary’s comments, as the public endorsement directly countered the selectors' stance and complicated their effort to chart a new direction for the squad.
