In further positive news for the squad, young batsman Tilak Varma is also nearing peak fitness. He is expected to join the national team in Mumbai shortly, coinciding with the group's assembly following the conclusion of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The team will gather in Mumbai for two crucial warm-up fixtures before flying out for their World Cup opener against the USA on February 7.

While Washington’s availability for the opening matches against the USA and Namibia remains uncertain, the team management is taking a long-term view. They view him as a vital asset for the latter half of the tournament, particularly as he is the only specialist off-spinner in the squad with a proven international track record. Given the lack of alternative off-spin depth, with Riyan Parag currently outside the immediate setup—the management is willing to carry Washington even if he isn't at 100 per cent for the initial group stage.
India’s tactical blueprint for the tournament heavily relies on the unique skill set of Washington Sundar. While Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are earmarked for the middle overs, the team management views the Tamil Nadu off-spinner as a vital asset for the Powerplay, especially against lineups featuring several left-handed batsmen. As the tournament progresses and pitches likely become slower, Washington’s ability to provide both early breakthroughs and lower-order batting depth is considered non-negotiable, even if his inclusion necessitates leaving out a specialist.

Sundar expected to return to fold in Super 8s
The team's strategy is specifically focused on the Super 8 stage and beyond. Even if Washington is unavailable for the initial group fixtures, the management intends to have him ready for the high-stakes clashes against tournament heavyweights. This long-term approach highlights his importance to the team's balance, with leadership willing to wait for his return rather than compromising on the tactical flexibility he offers.
Currently, Washington is progressing well through his rehabilitation at the CoE. After an initial period of rest, he has resumed batting without any physical discomfort and is expected to return to the bowling crease within days. The BCCI medical team is taking a cautious approach, avoiding a strict deadline to ensure a smooth recovery. Even if he misses the official warm-up matches, the plan remains for him to link up with the squad once the tournament officially commences.
Meanwhile, Tilak Varma’s return to the fold is imminent but remains subject to a final clearance. The young batsman is scheduled to undergo a fitness test shortly, and once he receives the green light from the medical staff, he will join the rest of the squad to begin his World Cup preparations.
