Dinesh Karthik recently engaged in some pointed but playful banter with former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain regarding Pakistan's early exit from T20 World Cup 2026. Karthik’s comments were a direct callback to the duo’s previous criticisms of India's victory in the Champions Trophy 2025. He pointedly reminded them that Men in Green enjoyed the exact same logistical advantages in this tournament that India was criticised for having last year.
Dinesh Karthik pulls up Atherton, Hussain on Pakistan's exit
The context for this debate stems from a long-standing tri-party agreement between the BCCI, PCB, and ICC, which dictates that India and Pakistan will not travel to each other's countries for tournaments. Consequently, during the 2025 Champions Trophy, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team played all their matches at neutral venues in the UAE. While India ultimately lifted the trophy, critics, including Hussain and Atherton, argued that India had an unfair physical advantage because other teams were forced to travel between two different countries while India remained stationed in one.

In a reversal of roles for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan benefited from a similar arrangement, playing all of their matches in Sri Lanka, including their high-profile clash against co-hosts India in Colombo. Despite this stability and the lack of travel fatigue, Pakistan endured a disappointing campaign and failed to progress to the semi-finals. By highlighting this, Karthik effectively challenged the narrative that venue consistency was the sole reason for India's prior success, calling out the inconsistency in the commentators' previous logic.
"I expected Pakistan to qualify for the semis because they played consistently in Colombo, stayed in one hotel, knew the pitches well - and both you fossils complained that this was the reason India did so well in the Champions Trophy. By that logic, Pakistan should have done something in this World Cup," Karthik said in an interaction with SKY Sports.
Pakistan's dismal outing at T20 World Cup
Pakistan’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 concluded with a lackluster record, as they managed to defeat only one Test-playing nation. That lone victory was far from comfortable, coming in a nail-biting encounter against Sri Lanka that was decided on the very last ball, with Pakistan narrowly defending their total to win by just five runs.
The rest of the tournament's marquee matchups were largely forgettable for Men in Green. They suffered a heavy 61-run defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India, and while they hoped to regain momentum against New Zealand, the match was completely washed out due to rain. Their struggles reached a breaking point against England, where they fell short in a tense two-wicket loss that effectively sealed their exit from the tournament.
