Temba Bavuma believes India will beat West Indies to seal T20 World Cup semis berth

India will take on West Indies on March 1, which will decide their semifinal fate

Ahead of the high-stakes Super 8 clash between India and the West Indies at Eden Gardens, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has weighed in with a bold prediction. Scheduled for Friday, March 1, this encounter serves as a virtual eliminator, with the final semifinal spot of T20 World Cup 2026 hanging in the balance. The magnitude of the game is amplified by the history between these two sides, marking their first World Cup meeting since their iconic 2016 semifinal showdown.

West Indies can match any power from a batting point of view: Temba Bavuma

While both teams boast explosive batting lineups capable of changing a game in an instant, Bavuma believes the deciding factor will be the quality of the bowling attacks. He has backed India to secure the win and advance to the semifinals, noting that their roster appears more clinical and well-rounded. According to the Proteas skipper, the sheer depth of the Indian side gives them a distinct edge in such a high-pressure environment.

Bavuma highlighted the potency of India’s primary strike bowlers, specifically naming Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, and Kuldeep Yadav as the core threats. He further noted that the presence of versatile all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube provides India with exceptional tactical balance, allowing them to adapt to any situation the Kolkata pitch might present.

"It is exciting. I think the West Indies is a team that can match any power from a batting point of view. So, you know, I cannot call much there. Probably in the bowling, where I would say there is a difference between the two bowling attacks, where India is in favor; it is in Kolkata,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by ANI.

The characteristics of the Eden Gardens surface are expected to be a defining factor in this high-stakes encounter. Reflecting on South Africa's experience during a Test match at the venue last year, Temba Bavuma noted that while the pitch historically offers assistance to slow bowlers, he does not anticipate extreme turn for this specific Super 8 clash. Nonetheless, any degree of grip could shift the advantage toward the side better equipped to exploit it. This potential for turn places a massive spotlight on Varun Chakravarthy, whose intimate knowledge of the ground stems from his tenure with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Having claimed 30 wickets in 22 IPL appearances at Eden Gardens, mystery spinner understands the nuances of the local conditions better than most. Despite a somewhat expensive career economy rate of 8.60 at the venue, his ability to deceive batters in familiar territory remains a primary weapon for India. Chakravarthy’s overall tournament form has been impressive, as he currently leads India’s wicket-taking charts with 11 scalps at a sharp average of 13.09. However, his recent performances in the Super 8 stage have raised some concerns; he proved expensive against both South Africa and Zimbabwe, conceding a combined 82 runs. India will be hoping that a return to his "home" ground provides the spark he needs to rediscover his clinical edge against the West Indies.

“Look, when we played there, the test match, I mean, it spun quite a lot. So, obviously, you do not expect it to play like that. But obviously, there is that ability for it to turn. I mean, India has that strength, right? Chakravarthy is there waiting. The West Indies has a couple of left-handers (in-form Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford). So maybe you could see that,” he added.

I do see India going through to the semifinals: Bavuma

Concluding his analysis, the Proteas star expressed his belief that the defending champions have what it takes to outclass the West Indies in this high-stakes encounter. With England, South Africa, and New Zealand having already secured their places in the next round, only one spot remains in the final four. Bavuma's confidence in the Indian side suggests they are the favorites to clinch that last semifinal berth and keep their title defense alive.

“I think India as well; you know, you kind of always add an extra 20 runs to their score. So, as exciting as it is, I do see India going through to the semifinals,” Bavuma concluded.
